Young Savants

dsci0253Young Savants Mission Statement What is Young Savants?

Young Savants is an independent non-profit organization providing life enrichment programs serving at-risk boys and girls, grades 6-12, in Boston Public Schools. We leverage the energy children spend on basketball and teach them how to redirect this energy into the classroom, at home, and in the community.

What is the goal of the organization?

Our goal is for each student to achieve his or her personal best, to graduate from high school with the skills necessary to attend college and pursue their dreams.

Young Savants defines an at-risk student as one who is lacking self esteem, support systems, or opportunities to succeed as a productive member of one’s community, school, and family. Young Savants collaborates with students’ parents, teachers, coaches, and guidance counselors to select boys and girls who have the most to gain from the Young Savants program. Successful applicants complete an application, essay, and interview demonstrating an active interest in their own academic and personal growth but are struggling to reach their full potential.

What does Young Savants expect of its students?

We expect that students will improve school attendance, eliminate substance abuse, improve academic standings, participate in the community, and demonstrate integrity and pride on and off the court.

The life cycle of Young Savants

Being a Young Savant doesn’t end in high school. Young Savants alumni return as mentors for current Young Savant students, giving them a chance to give back to the program and the community.
