History
In five short years, Young Savants has grown from a conceptual idea to a solid organization with approximately 60 core members. When the program began in 1999, only 40% of the students who participated successfully completed the program. In 2004, approximately 80% of the participants completed the academic component of Young Savants by advancing to higher education. The rapid expansion of Young Savants is evident in the initiation of pilot programs, scheduled to begin at three Boston Public Schools. There have been over 100 volunteers recruited to assist with the implementation of Young Savants. In 1999, there were no athletes who were able to attend a basketball camp. However, in 2004, funding was solicited to provide 8 full scholarships for athletes to attend basketball camps. In addition, in the last 5 years, 130 students, parents and volunteers attended three trips to Montreal, Canada to attend the Martin Luther King Basketball tournament.
